Dal Gosht Bombay Style

  • 500 gms Mutton

  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds (Jeera)

  • 1 Large Onion (chopped)

  • 1 Bay Leaf

  • 2 inch Cinnamon

  • 4 Cloves

  • 10 Peppercorns

  • 5 Garlic cloves

  • 1 inch Ginger

  • 4 slit Chillies

  • 6 - 8 Curry Leaves

  • 2 small Tomatoes finely chopped

  • 1 & 1/2 tsp Garam Masala

  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder

  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder

  • 1/2 tsp Red Chilli Powder

  • 1 cup of Moong and Toor dal mixed

  • 3 cups Water

For Tadka

  • Half Onions sliced

  • 1/2 inch Ginger sliced

Step by Step

  1. First marinate the mutton with salt and turmeric and refrigerate it for 3 hours

  2. Heat some oil in a cooker and add cumin seeds, once it starts crackling then add onions, fry the onions well until they are golden brown and add bay leaf.

  3. Coarsely pound ginger, garlic, cinnamon, peppercorns, and cloves and then add it to the cooker to fry them well until the raw smell is gone.

  4. Now add chillies and curry leaves in the cooker and stir it well with the rest of the masalas, then add tomatoes, garam masala, coriander powder, turmeric powder and red chilli powder and stir well and let fry and then add little salt so the tomatoes cook faster fry the masalas realy well.

  5. Now add the moong, toor dal and mutton in the cooker mix the dal, masalas and the mutton really well, ensure its coated well.

  6. Add water and salt as per taste, give it a stir, cover with lid and let it cook for 7 - 8 whistles on medium low flame.

  7. Once your Dal Gosht is ready, in a separate pan, heat some oil add sliced onions and slices of ginger, fry them well until onions turn golden and then add it to Dal Gosht.

  8. Serve it with steamed rice.
