Saagwala Chicken | Chicken Spinach Curry

  • Half bunch Spinach (Palak)

  • 2 Cloves

  • 3 Peppercorns

  • 1 inch Cinnamon

  • 1 Star Anise

  • 1 big Onion sliced

  • tbsp Ginger Garlic paste

  • 500 gms Chicken marinated in salt and turmeric for 20 mins

  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder

  • 1 & 1/2 tsp Garam Masala powder

  • 2 tsp Red Chilli powder

  • 1 tsp Coriander powder

  • 2 tbsp Whisked Yogurt

  • Salt

  • A pinch of Kasuri Methi

Step by Step

  1. Boil the spinach adding little salt and water in a vessel, then set it aside to cool down, and grind it to a fine paste.

  2. Heat some oil in a vessel, add the peppercorns, cinnamon, star anise and cloves and fry it for some time. Now add the onions to the vessel and saute until it turns golden brown, now add the chicken pieces give it a nice stir, cover with lid and let it cook for 7 - 8 mins. (Keep checking in between to avoid chicken sticking to the vessel), add ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, garam masala powder, red chilli powder and give it a nice stir, now add the yogurt, stir it well, add some salt as per taste, sprinkle kasuri methi, cover with lid and let it cook for 2 minutes.

  3. After 2 mins, give it stir and now add the spinach paste to the chicken, add some water to the mixer jar collecting all the paste left and pour it into the vessel, add coriander powder and mix it all well. Let it cook with lid the covered for 5 more minutes.

  4. Your Saagwala Chicken is now ready to be served with some hot steamed rice or naan.
