Traditional Goan Prawn Caldine with Bottle Gourd

Ingredients for Caldine Curry


  1. ½ cup fresh grated coconut

  2. 1tbsp coconut milk powder

  3. 1 tbsp coriander powder

  4. ½ tsp turmeric

  5. 1 tsp cumin seeds

Other ingredients

  1. 4 garlic cloves finely chopped

  2. 1 medium onion finely chopped

  3. 1 tomato finely chopped

  4. 10 – 12 prawns

  5. 3 green chillies slit

  6. 1 tsp vinegar

  7. 1 cup Bottle Gourd (dudhi)

  8. Salt as per taste

  9. Cooking oil as desired

For Marination

  1. ½ tsp Salt

  2. ½ Turmeric

Step by step

  1. Apply salt and turmeric to prawns and let it marinate for 20 mins

  2. Grind coconut with 1 cup warm water, coriander powder, turmeric and cumin seeds

  3. Extract the coconut milk using a strainer. This forms your thick coconut milk

  4. Take ½ cup of warm water and add 1 and ½ tbsp coconut milk powder and stir it well

  5. Heat a pan and add cooking oil, proceed to fry the marinated prawns until golden brown

  6. Add some oil in another hollow pan, allow it to heat.

  7. Add chopped garlic and saute for half a minute, add chopped onion and fry until translucent

  8. Add tomatoes and fry for 3 – 4 mins

  9. Then you can add thin coconut milk and cover it with a lid, bring it to boil and then proceed to add salt and fried prawns and cook till done.

  10. Add the slit chillies and then add the thick coconut milk and bring it to boil and immediately take it off heat

  11. Add the vinegar, stir it well


Enjoy it with some hot steamed rice!
